Centella Asiatica | From Our Childhood Stories to Your Bathroom Vanity

Ingredient Deep Dive | Centella Asiatica

The folktales, mythologies, and stories we grow up with as children leave a lasting impression. These narratives, instilled in us from an early age, remain in our memories and often become sources of inspiration and creativity.

At Melixir, we aim to preserve the essence of Eastern philosophies and centuries-old traditional Korean skincare rituals in every bottle. Today, we invite you to explore one of our cherished ingredients: Centella Asiatica [byeong pul]. We’ll delve into its significance and share a bit of its history that connects us to this remarkable botanical.

Since When Tigers Smoked Pipes

There's an old saying throughout Asia that wounded tigers would roll in the leaves of Centella Asiatica to stimulate regeneration, which is why it’s more commonly known as “tiger grass.” For many of us at Melixir House in Seoul, this powerful imagery evokes awe and delight.

Most of us spent our childhoods listening to traditional Korean folktales, and interestingly enough, our all-time favorites often feature a tiger—whether it’s The Tiger and the Persimmon, The Sun and the Moon, or the Myth of Dangun. These stories have been passed down through generations.

In fact, the tiger has long represented the heart and soul of Korean heritage, as captured in the phrase "since when tigers smoked pipes" (호랑이가 담배 피던 시절부터), a colloquial way of saying “since ancient times.” In traditional paintings dating back to the 17th century, the tiger is often depicted standing majestically among rocks, clouds, and pine trees, exuding vigor and grandeur. Our ancestors displayed these paintings prominently in their homes, as tigers were viewed as guardians—mountain deities, if you will—that protect us and drive away evil spirits.

The image of this majestic animal seeking natural healing from Centella Asiatica beautifully symbolizes how long this plant has been revered in Korea for its medicinal properties. After all, it’s the key ingredient in the healing ointment found in nearly every Korean household, used to treat everything from minor paper cuts to deep scrapes.

Our appreciation for Centella Asiatica goes beyond its connection to our cultural heritage.

Its Biology and Benefits for Our Skin

Now, let’s explore the wonders Centella Asiatica can do for our skin.

One of the active compounds in the plant is madecassoside, known for its potent antioxidant properties that help the skin repair itself and correct visible damage. Additionally, the amino acids it contains are exceptional for soothing even the most irritated, acne-prone skin.

Centella Asiatica also contains a chemical compound called saponin, which enhances the skin’s barrier against UV rays, free radicals, and pollutants.

Beyond its undeniable healing properties, it excels at locking in moisture while delaying signs of aging, giving the skin a beautiful ‘glass-like’ glow and youthful appearance.

As you can see, Centella Asiatica provides the best of both worlds by beautifying our skin while offering protective and healing benefits.

Now, we can’t help but wonder: could it be that Centella Asiatica has always been the secret behind the tiger's strength and alluring beauty?

To Bring It to a Close...

While Centella Asiatica may still be an unfamiliar name for many, even those who consider themselves skincare enthusiasts, it is regarded as a panacea in the East and is only recently gaining recognition in the West.

And did we mention it’s often referred to as the “miracle elixir of life”? Voilà!

With every Melixir product you uncap, we aim to provide you with a new cultural experience, backed by clinical results, and ultimately bring you closer to nature—even if it’s just through a quick whiff.
